Sailing Lesson - First Sailing

When you are sailing for the first time, you will find that it's wonderful to use wind to move a boat over water. Your coach will demonstrate how to use the wind and sail to start, stop, and steer the sailboat. You will actually experience how the wind affects sailboat sailing. You also have the opportunity to personally steer and sail. Relax yourself and enjoy yourself.

Boarding:

When you get on or off the boat, please walk to the center of the boat to avoid excessive turbulence. When boarding, please firmly grasp a fixed object on board. If someone has already boarded the ship first, it should stay in the center of the ship. Lower the center plate to keep the hull balanced. When you sail for the first time, you should lower the center board.

In place:

The person who drives a sailboat, controls the mainsail, and helps maintain the hull balance is called the helmsman. The helmsman should sit on the upper side of the sail, face the sail, and sit at the forefront of the tiller. This position allows better observation of sails, winds and waves. The use of a tiller extension allows the helmsman to sit more forward. The helmsman should ensure that everyone on board wears a life jacket and observes safety procedures.

Other crewmembers help the sailboat maintain its balance, adjust the sail's windward angle, and observe other ships and obstacles. The crew should sit in the center of the boat to avoid boat stern or bows being too low. When a good aviator moves on board, he should try to keep the hull stable.

If the sailboat you are riding on has a front sail, it should be handled by an airman other than the helmsman. If necessary, the flight crew should adjust the mainsail puller, the pull-down cable, and the backstay cable. If you are driving a single sailboat, you will be doing all the work on the sail, the center board, and the hull balance. This may seem like a lot of things, but the skills of familiarizing yourself with the various operations will soon adapt.

Start sailing:

The first step in developing sailing skills is to learn how to start. Starting a sailing boat is really easy. Your center board must be lowered and the tiller should be in the middle. Now close the sail enough to allow air to flow evenly across the sail. If the sails are accurate, the windward and downwind weathervane swings back smoothly. Drive forward and start sailing!

Drive with tiller:

If you want to make the sailboat turn in another direction, you only need to push and pull the tiller in the opposite direction. Move the tiller to the right, then turn the ship to the left and move the tiller to the left, then turn the ship to the right. However, we often use the term “to steer the stern with the rudder rudder” or “turn the stern to turn the stern” on the ship.

The direction of the turning wind is sometimes referred to as upwind or top wind, and the direction of turning away from the wind is sometimes referred to as downwind or downwind.

When sailing, the helmsman's hands should be held together, and from time to time observe the sails and waves and winds in front of the ship, and often observe the dynamics of the ship from downwind.

You can only use the tiller to sail, but the tiller extension allows the helmsman to sit more on the outside of the deck.

Drive by weight:

You can also rely on sails and your weight to drive sailboats. At this stage of the first voyage, it is not necessary to do so often. However, it is still very helpful to understand how to influence the balance of sailing boats through actual experience to understand the dip and the angle of sail. Try to fix the rudder on the midline, first tilt the body upwind and then shrink it downwards to change the direction of sailing.

Drive by sail:

You can also sail by adjusting sails. Song Qianfan will turn the boat towards the wind. Loosing the mainsail will turn the ship downwind. So you may find that if the mainsail is not released, it will be difficult to sail the boat downwind, especially in moderate winds or high winds.

balance:

According to the balance theorem, you can sail a sailboat just by sailing instead of using a rudder, just like a windsurfing board. The movement of the sailboat is the result of a concerted effort. From time to time all the forces are in one direction. The force generated by the mainsail and front sail will move the boat forward or sideways. There is also the opposing force generated by the water acting on the center plate and the rudder.

When all these forces are in balance, the sailboat will go in a straight line. If it is not balanced, the sailboat will turn. This is why you can steer the sailboat by controlling the tightness of the mainsail and the front sail. In this way, the sailboat is deliberately under control to lose balance.

As boating skills improve, you will increasingly use the principle of balance to get the best driving results and complete more advanced actions. As far as the current first voyage is concerned, you only need to know that the principle of balance helps to explain some of the situations that appear on the sailing boat.

Safe location:

When you sail for the first time, you probably spend most of the day in the crosswind, that is, the wind blowing from one side of the sailboat. This is the easiest way for beginners to navigate. You can try various ways to steer, stop, start, and practice using rudder angle indicators.

When the wind blows from one side of the sailboat, the sail will not stop until it is like a flag waving in the wind. You are in a safe place right now. Tighten the sail and you start sailing again. Relax, you stop again. Repeat several times until you are skilled.

Stop sailing:

There are two ways to use it. The first is to loosen the sail until the sail loses its momentum in the wind, so that the complete sail will make you in a safe position. Once in a safe position, you can replace the crew, adjust equipment, or simply stop and rest. The second way is to switch the bow, so that the bow directly toward the wind. In the terminal this approach should be given priority.
