Recently, the Biomass Efficient Conversion Research Group (Group 1816) led by Researcher Zhao Zongbao of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the first time in the study of biomass energy, achieved the first simultaneous use of glucose and xylose to produce oil. This important research result was officially published in Biotechnology for Biofuels (Hu et al., Biotechnology for Biofuels, 2011, 4: 25).
Biomass is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, and its hydrolysate has the basic characteristics of coexistence of glucose and xylose. One of the common difficulties faced by the conversion of biomass hydrolysate into liquid fuel is that the coexisting raw materials of glucose and xylose are difficult to be efficiently used by microorganisms. Biodiesel is an important liquid biofuel. The bottleneck of its large-scale application is the insufficient supply of oil and fat raw materials. Microbial oils and fats have a fatty acid composition similar to animal and vegetable oils and fats, and can be used to prepare biodiesel.
The Research Group of Biomass Efficient Conversion of Dalian Chemical Institute has been devoted to the research of converting biomass into biodiesel for many years. Through screening, it was found that part of the oleaginous yeast can simultaneously use glucose and xylose to accumulate oil in the cell, and the oil content of the bacterial body reached 59%. The oleaginous yeast was directly cultivated with corn stover hydrolysate, and the fat content of the cells reached 39%.
The research results are of great significance for the development of mixed sugar simultaneous biotransformation technology, reducing the cost of raw materials for microbial oil production, and expanding the raw materials for the biodiesel industry.
