Outbound Travel | UnionPay pushes “flash payment” to North America

China UnionPay is bringing its new mobile payment tool, QuickPass, to North American countries. The first stop is Canada. They will be launched in several restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets. This is the first time North American countries have introduced this payment method.

The so-called flash payment, UnionPay has been promoted in the country for a long time. This payment tool is actually more like electronic cash. A financial IC card equipped with a flash chip (a debit card or credit card marked with QuickPass) does not need to be inserted into the POS. Scanning directly from the top of the POS can complete the payment. There is no need to sign and pay the password within the limit.

In addition to faster payment, financial IC cards that support flash payment can be paid in an offline environment, which also solves many network delay problems during settlement.

UnionPay launched this payment method in several stores in Canada. Consumers can use those financial IC cards with flash payment function or use on mobile phones equipped with NFC chips. The non-signed non-disclosure amount is 100 Canadian dollars (or 515 yuan).

To promote flash payment to North American countries, in addition to the expansion of new markets by UnionPay, the main attraction is domestic tourists. In addition to domestic consumers' relative familiarity with this payment method, the frequency of domestic tourists using credit cards in Canada is also increasing.
In the past year, China has gradually become one of the most important sources of tourists in Canada. Currently located in the second echelon, although not as good as the United States, consumer spending has gradually increased. In the third quarter of 2015, the consumption of credit cards increased by 30.2% year-on-year.

According to UnionPay, 70,000 merchants and 85% of ATMs in Canada currently support UnionPay. It seems that UnionPay will quickly promote this payment method among the 70,000 merchants.

Previously, flash payment has been launched in China (including Hong Kong and other regions) and overseas countries such as Australia, and 7 million POS machines support this payment method.
