Founder screen soft proofing introduction

Peking University Founder Electronics Co., Ltd. has introduced KODAK's color management kernel, and has conducted a full range of color management studies ranging from scanning, screen color correction, and digital proofing to printing and publishing industries. Especially in the screen soft proofing and digital proofing has made a wealth of experience. Here I will introduce here the Founder screen soft proofing adjustment method.

With the development of computer technology and color reproduction technology, the color of the image is more and more frequently transferred among various devices. However, the problems caused by the color deviation in the transmission process are also increasing. People have experienced the pain of relying on traditional color control to duplicate colors, especially between design and printing. Therefore, the market demand for precise screen simulation screens and screen analog printing in the prepress, printing, and design industries is also increasingly urgent. With the increasing demand for screen soft proofing and remote proofing, Founder has introduced a professional-level screen soft proofing solution that will enable the screen to meet the needs of industry professionals.

Founder screen soft proofing uses KODAK's ColorFlow MPB (monitor profile builder) software to perform basic screen corrections, adjust the display to standard color temperature values and gamma values, and ultimately generate a monitor profile file that complies with industry standards.

MPB is a very professional screen correction software. It can use the manual calibration screen in the software, or use the colorimeter to make accurate measurements (a professional colorimeter is recommended). MPB generates standard ICC files that can be used in graphic and image design software, such as Founder Painting Studio, Photoshop, Founder Century RIP, and Founder Flow Color Management.

Everyone often hears the term ICC. The ICC file is a device characteristic file and is a data file that describes the color characteristics and the color gamut range of the device. All color devices in print production must have their own profile. Therefore, people will be divided into three categories Profile: The first type is the input device Profile file, such as scanners, digital cameras, also known as the source profile (Source Profile); the second is the profile of the display device; third The class is a profile file of the output device, such as a printer, a printer, also called a destination profile.

Not every monitor can be used for screen soft proofing. We understand that each peripheral in the printing production has its own characteristic file, namely ICC file. Whether it is soft proofing or digital proofing, it is closely related to the degree of print reduction and its own quality. If a monitor with poor performance is used for soft proofing, the color gamut of the screen is much smaller than the color gamut of the print. Even if color management is used, the effect of printing proofs cannot be restored. Please pay careful attention to our requirements for the equipment below.

First, select soft proofing screen and display card

The MPB can create ICC profiles and perform basic calibration of the hardware. Both Windows platforms and Apple platforms can generate ICC files. If your system is running Windows 95 or Windows 98, you must have a video card that supports "downloadable gamma ramp" to calibrate your screen. If the video card does not support "downloadable gamma ramp", then
Basic calibration of the hardware will not be performed in the Windows NT4.0 system. We provide the program “CHECKVID.EXE” in the MPB installation disk to check if your video card can reach this standard.

The following list is compatible graphics card models

ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo (sold as Xclaim 98)
Matrox Millennium II
STB nVidea ZX 8MB (sold as STB Velocity 128)
Matrox Mystique
Integrated Micro Systems twin turbo

Matrox G200
Matrox MGA
Diamond Viper 330
The following list is incompatible video card models Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro
Number Nine Imagine 128
Number Nine Imagine 128 (Series 2)
S3 Virge
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000
Paradise Viper
Matrox MGA Ultra/Impression PCI
ATI Graphics Pro Turbo PCI (mach64) V4.0
Recommended System Macintosh: G3 Mac OS Monitor System MacOS 8.6
Color sync 2.6.1
If the system is MacOS 9, you need color sync 3.0.
PC series recommended system: sony monitor, system Windows 95 or windows 98, screen measuring instrument such as X-Rite DTP92 (new model with USB interface).

Second, how MPB software works

There are two basic parameters for screen-based tuning: White point describes the screen's pure white color; Gamma describes the screen's contrast.

Once the screen is adjusted, it is still necessary to periodically check the screen's color rendering index and color reproduction rate. The MPB software includes a reminder function to facilitate the adjustment of the screen, and automatically prompts the operator when adjustment is required. If the screen color shifts, you can recalibrate the screen.

Third, the DTP92 system is connected to the system

Read the DTP92 documentation carefully to learn how to install the DTP92. Different DTP92s have different wiring and interfaces. We recommend that customers purchase a new type of X-Rite DTP92 with a USB interface.

Fourth, set the screen before the calibration screen

Before any device generates an ICC profile, it must do a basic calibration of the device. For example, the screen must be turned on for at least half an hour before the screen is adjusted, and its status is adjusted to the standard state of the device. MPB software has two basic functions for basic calibration and generation of device ICC files. Before making an ICC file for digital proofing, the digital proofing device must be linearized to measure the printer's ICC file in the correct density range and linearized state.

Many new screens have built-in digital controls that allow the user to set the screen to the desired White point. The result is not as accurate as in the MPB software, but it can give the MPB software a closer starting point for tuning.

Before using the MPB to tune the screen, set the White point of the screen as close as possible to the D5000. The closer the initial white point value is to the required white point value, the more accurate the screen adjustment will be. Adjust the Gamma value of the screen, Apple is 1.8, PC is 2.2. Generate a standard ICC profile file.

Adjust the screen contrast and brightness values before using MPB. Set the contrast to medium (50%) and set the brightness to 80%.

Fifth, install MPB software

Open the CD and double-click on Setup.exe.

Six, rapid use of MPB software

1. Create a new file.
Set Desired Monitor Characteristics to:
White Point: D5000
Gamma: 1.8
The MPB will now show the status before the screen has not been calibrated:
White point: 9052 x,y=0.3498 0.3607
Gamma: 1.79 r,g,b=1.811 1.80 1.83

2. Execute "Start Instruction Calibration".

3. If you run for the first time, the following menu will pop up:
Please enter the 7-digit password on the MPB software product box.
If the license number has been assigned to the host, the following measurement menu will pop up.

4. Align the suction of the DTP92 meter with the position identified above. Click on “Measure” and the software will automatically perform multiple cycles of calibration from white, gray, black, red, green and blue.

5. The adjusted White point is displayed here: 4867 x, y = 0.3498 0.3591
Gamma: 1.79 r,g,b=1.82 1.78 1.79
The difference between the adjusted White point and the expected White point minus should be less than 150. If this value is greater than 150, continue with "Start Instrumented /confirm/iation".

6. Store the corrected result. Select the menu File Save and name it. The naming method can be combined with the system or time name, so that it is easy to distinguish. If you want to change the Gamma and White point values, simply open the file you just saved and reselect the White point and Gamma values in the drop-down menu “Dsired Monitor Characteristics”. The software automatically calculates the raw data before the adjustment according to the newly given Gamma and White point values, and does not need to re-measure.

7. Save the ICC file and select the menu File→Save ICC Profile. The following menu will pop up.
Enter the profile and manufacturer and model description here, and click Save Profile.
Macintosh computers: Save to system→Colorsync Profile folder.
Windows computers: Save to Windows/system/color directory.

Founder screen soft proofing solution is simple. The biggest feature is that after the ICC file is generated, Kodak profile editor can be used for fine adjustment. The powerful color correction function and level adjustment function of the analog extension and image processing software make it able to accurately achieve the purpose of soft proofing of the screen. In the future, we will continue to introduce its fine-tuning function and how to set it in the graphics processing software after generating the screen ICC file.
