Weatherproofing Outdoor Research Equipment – Insights from The Packaging Doctor
Opening the Lab Doors

Dear Doctor,
I hope you don’t mind me reaching out—I know this might not be strictly about packaging, but I’m hoping you could guide me. My team works at a university research facility, and our latest project involves observing sheep’s eating behaviors. To achieve this, we’re planning to attach a small camera around the sheep’s neck. It’s crucial that the camera remains protected and weather-resistant, but it also needs to remain fully operational—meaning we’ll need to press buttons and make adjustments while it’s in use. Do you have any suggestions for a lightweight, thin material that offers good protection without getting in the way?
Thanks in advance, and best wishes,
Ben
Hi Ben,
This is certainly one of the more unique challenges I’ve encountered! While a quick fix might involve wrapping the camera in a plastic bag, I understand that you need something more reliable and professional for your research. For this scenario, I’d recommend using heat shrink wrap—either polythene or polyolefin. Polyolefin is preferred for its superior clarity, but both options are lightweight and provide excellent moisture protection. To apply the wrap, you’ll need a desktop shrink system, which uses heat to snugly fit the film around the camera. This setup ensures that the camera stays safe and functional during your experiments.
I wish you and your team all the best with your research. Remember, science and innovation go hand-in-hand!

As researchers continue to push boundaries, protecting sensitive equipment becomes increasingly important. Whether it’s cameras monitoring wildlife behavior or sensors tracking environmental changes, ensuring durability and functionality under harsh conditions is key. Heat shrink wrap, as suggested by The Packaging Doctor, is just one example of how creative solutions can address complex issues. If you ever find yourself puzzled by packaging conundrums, don’t hesitate to seek expert advice—you never know what ingenious answers await!
