Building a DIY Floating Island: A Unique Use for Strapping
When most people think about packaging, they usually picture it as something functional—protecting products or ensuring safety during transport. But today, we’re going to talk about a creative application where packaging takes on a completely new role. We recently received an inquiry from a customer with an unusual request—one that made us think beyond the usual uses of packaging materials. Let’s dive into how our very own Packaging Doctor assisted this customer with their unique challenge.
Dear Doctor,
I’ve been brainstorming ways to help protect local bird populations by giving them a safe haven. Birds often face threats from predators, and I wanted to create a floating island where they could live without fear. To make this happen, I’ve used some common recycled household items to build the base structure. Now, I need a solution to bind these components securely so that the island remains sturdy and won’t fall apart over time. My plan is to add grass on top to mimic a natural island environment.
Can you help me figure this out? Thank you!
Sincerely, Phillip

Hello Phillip,
What a fantastic initiative! It’s inspiring to see someone take recycled materials and turn them into something that benefits wildlife. Your idea of creating a safe space for birds is both innovative and environmentally conscious.
For your project, we recommend using our 12.5mm polypropylene strapping. This material is ideal for securing lightweight to medium-duty projects like yours. It features an embossed surface that helps prevent splitting while maintaining strong, tight seals. Plus, it’s easy to work with, making it perfect for DIY enthusiasts like yourself.
With this strapping, you’ll be able to rest assured that your floating island remains intact, providing a stable and safe home for the birds. They’ll thank you for it!
Best regards, The Packaging Doctor
