Pure titanium frames and "impure" selection should be cautious

In the world of eyewear, a seemingly ordinary pair of glasses can suddenly become a high-value product just by claiming to be made of "titanium." This simple word can significantly boost the price—sometimes doubling it, or even multiplying it by ten or more compared to regular metal or alloy frames. Recently, a reporter visited several optical shops and wholesale markets in Jinan, Shandong, and discovered a wide variety of titanium frames on the market. However, the confusion surrounding brands, quality, and pricing makes it extremely difficult for average consumers to distinguish between genuine products and misleading marketing tactics. One of the biggest issues is that there is currently no national standard for titanium content in spectacle frames. As a result, many businesses are unclear about how much titanium their products actually contain. During the visit, the reporter found that most stores didn’t provide any official test certificates or detailed specifications about the titanium content. Instead, they relied solely on verbal explanations from sales staff, who often exaggerated the benefits of titanium frames without clear evidence. At one local optical shop, the salesperson claimed that titanium frames were becoming increasingly popular due to their lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and durable properties. They also mentioned that titanium could help prevent skin irritation, which made them appealing to many customers. However, when the reporter asked for specific details about the titanium content, the clerk was unable to provide any concrete information. The price differences among titanium frames were equally confusing. Some frames labeled as "pure titanium" or "titanium alloy" ranged from just over 10 yuan to as much as 3,000 yuan, creating a hundredfold price gap. Even within the same brand, such as Seiko, the prices varied widely depending on where they were sold—wholesale markets had them for around 400 yuan, while urban optical shops charged over 1,000 yuan, and online platforms offered them for as low as 100 yuan. According to Mr. Zhang, an optical shop owner in Jinan, the price differences largely depend on factors like location, target customer base, rent, and operational costs. He also pointed out that pure titanium frames are often just a marketing gimmick. In reality, the material cost of a titanium frame is not high—usually less than 20 yuan—and with labor and other expenses, the total cost rarely exceeds 50 yuan. Therefore, consumers shouldn't feel pressured to buy expensive titanium frames simply because of the label. Interestingly, many so-called international brands like Armani, H&M, Ferrari, and Porsche appeared on the shelves, but their quality and authenticity were questionable. Some of these frames were clearly counterfeit, with minor spelling errors or direct translations of brand names into Chinese pinyin. Despite this, some customers still preferred foreign-branded products, believing they were superior, even though the actual quality was often comparable to cheaper alternatives. Experts at the Jinan Metrology and Testing Institute confirmed that producing 100% pure titanium spectacle frames is technically challenging and not currently available on the market. Most products are titanium alloys, and there is no official standard to regulate their composition. The lack of transparency and regulation has created a confusing and potentially risky environment for consumers. In conclusion, while titanium frames may offer some advantages, the current market lacks clear standards and honest labeling. Consumers should be cautious, do their research, and not be swayed by marketing hype. Always ask for proper documentation and consider the real value before making a purchase.
