North University of Science and Technology developed a high-efficiency separation material for oil-water mixture

Recently, Professor Zhang Xueji of the Beijing University of Science and Technology and Professor Feng Lin of the Department of Chemistry of Tsinghua University cooperated with the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to develop a new functional membrane material that can separate oil and water. The material is capable of selectively and efficiently separating water from a range of oil-water mixtures in a matter of minutes with a separation efficiency of over 99%. Related papers were published in Advanced Materials.

In recent years, the frequent offshore oil spill accidents in the world have caused serious pollution and damage to the marine environment and aquatic ecosystem. The cleanup of oil pollution is a subject of great concern. At present, most of the oil-water separation materials can separate or adsorb oil from the oil-water mixture, but such materials are easily blocked by oil, and the number of uses and the effect of use are greatly limited. In addition, another "water removal" type material can selectively remove water from the oil-water mixture, and can effectively prevent the adsorption and clogging of the oil by the membrane material, but requires complicated chemical modification steps in the preparation process. And it is unstable in a complex oil-contaminated environment.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a new type of "water removal" material to meet its requirements for use in complex environments. The team's researchers used a simple mechanical drilling process on commercial nitrocellulose membranes to prepare oil-water separation membranes with micron and nanoporous structures, enabling fast and efficient oil-water separation. It is worth noting that the separation time and efficiency of the oil-water mixture can be effectively regulated by adjusting the parameters. Moreover, the material has good environmental tolerance and a long service life.

Unlike traditional “water removal” materials, this “water removal” material based on nitrocellulose membranes does not require any chemical modification steps in the preparation process, and can also meet the needs of large-scale production for real life. The oil treatment in the oil and water separation provides excellent tools.
