On August 14th, in general, 3D object shape reconstruction requires advanced laser scanners. Recently, a study published by SIGGRAPH 2017, the top conference in the field of computer graphics, has taken a different approach: using water as a medium to acquire the surface of objects, and transforming the task of modeling 3D objects into volume problems.
"This new method can accurately reconstruct the hidden parts of the object and overcome the limitations of the common 3D laser scanning method." Professor Chen Baoquan, Dean of the School of Computer Science, Shandong University, told the Science Daily that traditional 3D scanning and shape modeling often use laser scanning. The instrument and camera scan the surface of the object. The limitation is that the light cannot be sampled in places where the light is not available, and the structures such as cracks and tiny bumps are incompletely sampled, and special materials such as transparency are difficult to handle.
To this end, scientists have immersed objects in water, measured the displacement of the object, and then used this volume change information to reconstruct the surface shape of the object, the advantage is reflected. “Water can fit well on complex surfaces and penetrate into the cavity. Calculating the displacement does not require consideration of the refractive index and polarization of the light, and easily bypasses the limitations of optical equipment,†said Chen Baoquan.
In the experiment, the researchers made a simple "3D immersion device". By immersing objects in water at different angles several times, the researchers can get information on multiple cross-sections of the object, and then accurately calculate the geometry of the object. Shapes, including the parts that are often difficult to capture with a laser scanner. Researchers say CT equipment is bulky and can only be used in specific environments at a high cost. In contrast, the immersion conversion method produces a more accurate shape at a lower computational cost, is more cost effective, and has a wider range of applications.
The high-tech result, titled "Reconstruction Based on Immersion Conversion 3D Shape", led by Professor Chen Baoquan led the Beijing Film Academy's future image innovation center, combined with the researchers of Tel Aviv University, Ben Gurion University, and the University of British Columbia, Canada. Collaboration.
