Kite Packaging On The Radio

Kite Packaging on the Radio

By Jake Kirk • Friday 23rd May 2014

All we hear is radio ga-ga…

It’s been a pretty exciting week for us here at Kite Packaging, as our industry has taken center stage on the airwaves! Not in a dramatic, full-on “radio takeover” kind of way, but still, it's pretty cool to see packaging being talked about on such a public platform. While it might seem a bit unusual, packaging plays a huge role in today’s world and is often linked to key issues that are making headlines.

Radio

One of the topics we’ve been discussing is the B2B (business-to-business) side of things. Many B2B companies sell services or consultancy rather than physical products, which makes the purchasing process quite different from e-commerce. At Kite, we believe that buying packaging is a functional decision, so personal interaction isn’t always necessary — but that doesn’t mean we don’t value it.

On Wednesday, May 21st, our Managing Partner, Gavin Ashe, joined BBC C&W to talk about a recent case involving fraudsters who stole over £3,000 worth of packaging from us back in 2012. It was our first time on the radio, and it turned out to be a meaningful conversation. A full investigation followed, and this week, we returned to the show with some good news — the criminals were sentenced. You can read more about the case in our press release.

Annie was a great host, and she asked Gavin how this experience had changed the way we operate. The incident made us more cautious when handling credit accounts and setting credit limits. As an employee-owned company, we take theft very seriously — it affects everyone. We also thanked the station and Annie for helping raise awareness and supporting the case.

Later in the week, on Thursday, May 22nd, we caught up with the BBC Radio 4 program "Radio 4 In Business," hosted by Peter Day. The episode focused on environmental issues in the packaging sector, including the challenges of waste and sustainability. The program offered a balanced view, highlighting how packaging companies are working hard to develop eco-friendly solutions.

Peter spoke with Robert Opie, founder of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, exploring the origins of branding and packaging. He traced the idea back to Victorian times when mass production led to the need for individual packaging. This helped manufacturers protect their products and build brand identity.

The show also visited the Benson Group, one of the UK’s largest carton suppliers. Helen, their Marketing Manager, explained that while packaging contributes about 10% to a product’s carbon footprint, its role in protecting the rest of the product is just as important. By using sustainable materials, companies can reduce environmental impact and promote responsible consumption.

Lisa Carroll from Rexam shared insights on innovations in aluminum packaging. She described the development of an aluminum bottle — a complex project with four times the manufacturing steps of a standard can. Small changes, like reducing can weight by 0.1 grams, can lead to significant environmental benefits. Last year, that change saved 6,000 tonnes of material annually.

The program also touched on how consumer behavior influences packaging trends. With recycling initiatives becoming more widespread, around 60% of cans are now recycled. Consumers are also more aware of the environmental impact of their purchases. Grant Montague from Perception Research Services noted that even if people say they don’t care about packaging, it often affects their perception of a product’s quality and protection.

These discussions have definitely influenced our own approach at Kite Packaging. We’ve been focusing on making small but impactful changes to our products to improve sustainability. For example, we removed the cardboard core from our pallet wrap, reduced the size of the core in Envirotape by 60%, and switched to heavy-duty single-wall cardboard for our Enviroboxes.

If you missed the show, you can catch the full 30-minute program on the BBC website.
