Roman Polanski once said, “Good cinema should make you forget you are sitting in a theatre,†and this is especially true if the decor is right. Interior design in films plays a crucial role in storytelling. When done well, it adds an extra layer of psychological depth. Think about "American Psycho" without its sterile styling or "The Great Gatsby" without its opulent interiors. With that in mind, we're taking you behind the scenes of the Academy Award-nominated movies in the Best Achievement in Production Design category for the 94th Oscars. Grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the journey.
THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH (2021)
Directed and written by Joel Coen, with Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, and Alex Hassell
Production Design by Stefan Dechant and Set Decoration by Nancy Haigh

This Shakespearean adaptation follows a Scottish lord who becomes convinced by a trio of witches that he will become the next King of Scotland. His ambitious wife supports his plans to seize power. The film takes place in the 19-20s century, using black and white cinematography to give it a classic feel. It's a historical film blending thriller and crime elements.

Stefan Dechant has worked in the film industry for over three decades, contributing as an illustrator, concept artist, storyboarder, and art director. For Joel Coen’s first solo feature, "The Tragedy of Macbeth," Dechant created vast, minimalist sets with foggy exteriors. The challenge was to incorporate psychology into the production design, which he found both challenging and rewarding.
DUNE (2021)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Denis Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. With Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.
Production Design by Patrice Vermette and Set Decoration by Richard Roberts and Zsuzsanna Sipos

The story begins in the year 10191 with an aristocratic family arriving on the desert planet Arrakis. They must govern the Fremen and mine the valuable spice resource. The narrative explores themes of good versus evil, colonialism, and ecology.

On Caladan, Paul trains under a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired window. The palace was designed to resemble a medieval fortress. Vermette drew inspiration from old Japanese architecture rather than Gothic cathedrals, reflecting a civilization slowly fading away.
NIGHTMARE ALLEY (2021)
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, story by Kim Morgan, with Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Toni Collette.
Production Design by Tamara Deverell and Set Decoration by Shane Vieau

"Nightmare Alley" is a modern take on classic film noir. Guillermo del Toro aimed to capture the sordid underbelly of Hollywood and the American Dream. The film features Stanton Carlisle, a circus entrepreneur who swindles the wealthy, and Lilith Ritter, a psychotherapist who helps him but ultimately captures him.

Approximately 80% of the interiors were built in a studio. Each character’s space reflected their personality, such as Lilith’s golden-hued office with angelic light, and Stan’s shady backstage area filled with dark furnishings.
THE POWER OF THE DOG (2021)
Directed by Jane Campion, story by Thomas Savage and Jane Campion. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons.
Production Design by Grant Major and Set Decoration by Amber Richards, Gareth Edwards, and Tony Rush

Based on Thomas Savage’s 1968 novel, "The Power of the Dog" is set on a cattle ranch in Montana but filmed in New Zealand. The style reflects the 1920s, inspired by Theodore Roosevelt’s estate, Sagamore Hill. The mansion represents the sophistication of eastern settlers who came to colonize the West.

The exteriors were shot in Central Otago, while the interiors were built in Wellington. The design aimed to reflect the decline of the mansion over time.
WEST SIDE STORY (2021)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, screenplay by Tony Kushner, based on the stage play by Arthur Laurents. With Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, and Ariana DeBose.
Production Design by Adam Stockhausen and Set Decoration by Rena De Angelo

"West Side Story" opens with a whistle and a view of damaged New York, simulating a war zone. A wrecking ball looms over San Juan Hill, setting the stage for the conflict between the Sharks and Jets. Maria and Tony find love, and the Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim soundtrack brings the story to life.

Adam Stockhausen recreated 1950s New York, capturing the grittiest details. The iconic "America" dance number was filmed in Queens and Paterson, showcasing Puerto Rican street culture.
