Online Shop Selling "Poor Quality Furniture" Ordered to Refund Customer

The total cost was 11,000 yuan. The seller promised to cover delivery and on-site installation fees. After receiving the items, Mr. Tian discovered that the furniture did not match the customized size and had multiple defects. The wardrobe door wouldn’t close properly, the bedside table drawer was stuck, and some panels were warped or cracked. He immediately contacted the seller in Suining County, Jiangsu Province, but was told that custom-made goods could not be returned. The seller blamed the damage on transportation and claimed no responsibility. For the size discrepancies, the seller offered to return the furniture, but only if Mr. Tian covered the shipping costs. After repeated failed negotiations, Mr. Tian decided to take legal action. He demanded a full refund of 11,000 yuan, plus additional expenses including 600 yuan for installation, 400 yuan for moving the furniture upstairs, 6,900 yuan in rental fees for temporary storage, and 2,000 yuan in damages. The furniture factory was summoned to court multiple times but failed to appear. As a result, the court conducted a trial in absentia. The court ruled that the furniture did not meet the agreed quality standards and supported Mr. Tian’s request for a refund. It also ordered the seller to reimburse him for the installation and moving costs, as these were necessary expenses incurred during the purchase. Since the buyer and seller were in different cities, the court decided that the furniture should be picked up by the seller rather than sent back by Mr. Tian.
