Detection Methods and Operational Procedures
1. Adhesion Test: This method assesses the firmness of the printed material. A piece of transparent tape with a specific length is applied to the surface of the printed item. Use your fingers to press it firmly, ensuring full contact with the material. Then, lift the tape halfway slowly, followed by lifting the remaining half quickly. Observe if any ink or coating comes off during this process.
2. Soft Rubbing Test: Hold the printed material between your thumbs and index fingers of both hands. Rub the surface back and forth for 10 repeated motions. Check for any smudging, fading, or loss of print quality after the rubbing.
3. Scratch Resistance Test: Use your fingernails to scratch the printed area repeatedly five times. Examine the surface for any signs of damage, such as scratches or ink removal, to determine the resistance of the ink to abrasion.
4. Slipperiness Test: When testing for slippage, ensure that the printed material is not tested more than two hours after printing. This is because inks require some time to harden after application, and testing too soon may affect the results.
5. Blocking and Cohesion Test: Roll the printed product tightly and apply a pressure of 340–360 kg/cm². Then, slowly separate the layers. Check for any sticking or separation issues, which could indicate poor adhesion or cohesion between the layers.
6. Heat Resistance Test: Place the printed material on top of a clean aluminum foil and use an iron to apply heat for one second. Immediately remove the iron and check for any discoloration, smearing, or loss of ink due to heat exposure.
7. Freeze Resistance Test: Soak the printed material in cold water for 1 to 5 hours. Fold it 10 times and allow up to 5% weight loss. Afterward, dry it using adhesive tape without allowing more than 5% loss. This test evaluates the ink’s resistance to freezing, although in practice, the ink is more likely to be exposed to moisture from condensation rather than actual freezing conditions.
8. Grease Resistance Test: Apply a small amount of grease onto a piece of absorbent cotton and wipe the printed surface 20 times. Check for any ink transfer, smudging, or loss of print clarity to assess the ink’s resistance to oil or grease.
9. Odor Test: Place the white film and the printed material in separate sealed cans. Bake them in an oven at 50°C for one hour. Open the cans while they are still hot and smell the odors. Then let them cool to room temperature and smell again for comparison. This helps detect any volatile substances or unpleasant odors emitted by the ink or material.
All tests should be conducted at a room temperature of around 20°C. For regular inks, allow sufficient time after printing for natural hardening before testing. Two-component inks must be fully cured (hardened) before testing to observe any color changes or peeling. Measure the quality of the printed material and determine whether it meets the required standards for performance and durability.
