Furniture that meets the specific needs of users plays a vital role in promoting human health. It should be free from harmful substances and designed with safety in mind, ensuring no risk of poisoning or injury. The production process must follow strict dimensional standards to guarantee quality and usability. When furniture is designed based on ergonomic principles, it should possess the following key characteristics:
1) The materials used should be natural and non-toxic, avoiding any harmful chemicals that could affect user health.
2) A green, ergonomically designed product focuses on both the physiological conditions of the body in static and dynamic states. It ensures safe use under normal conditions and even occasional misuse, without causing harm.
3) The design should aim to extend the product's lifespan, making it more durable and reducing the need for reprocessing, which helps lower energy consumption.
4) The product should reflect high quality, incorporating cultural heritage and technological value, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits.
In terms of table and chair height, there are established national standards. For tables, the height ranges from 700 to 760 mm, with four different specifications. Chair seat heights should be between 400 and 440 mm, with three options available. The height difference between the table and chair should be maintained within 280 to 320 mm. Proper height allows a person to sit in two basic vertical positions: first, when feet are flat on the floor, the thighs and calves should form a near-right angle, with no pressure on the underside of the thighs. Second, when arms hang naturally, the upper and lower arms should be at a right angle, with the table top just touching the lower arm’s underside. This helps maintain correct posture while sitting and writing. If the height is incorrect, it can lead to poor posture and negatively impact health. Therefore, the space beneath the desk should be at least 580 mm in height and 520 mm in width.
For sofas, the front width of a single seat should not be less than 580 mm, the seat depth should range from 480 to 600 mm, and the seat height should be between 360 and 420 mm. Regarding wardrobes, the distance from the top of the hanger to the cabinet top should be 40 to 60 mm, as too little space may prevent proper hanging, while too much is wasteful. The distance from the bottom of the hanger to the cabinet base should be at least 1350 mm. The depth of the wardrobe should accommodate the shoulder width of a person, typically around 600 mm, but not less than 500 mm, otherwise the door cannot close properly when clothes are hung diagonally.
Bookcases also have specific standards. The shelf height should be at least 220 mm, as anything smaller would make it difficult to place books. The space between shelves is usually between 300 and 350 mm.
When choosing safe furniture, consumers should consider the following:
1) Stability: Look for products with a wide base and smooth bottom to prevent tipping.
2) Strength: Avoid thin or flimsy structures that may break easily, especially wooden ones.
3) Hazard traps: Check for sharp edges, corners, or gaps that could cause injury. For example, bed ladders with large openings could pose a danger to children.
4) Structure: Ensure all parts are solid, with tight joints and no exposed screws or nails.
5) Assembly: All components, including accessories, should fit properly with screws and locks that are easy to use and secure.
By paying attention to these details, consumers can make safer and healthier furniture choices. (Editor / Zhou Wei)
