It is commonly believed that engineers don’t have a strong sense of fashion, but David Ng, the mechanical engineer and founder of Cnaptic, proves otherwise. While the company focuses on developing STEM-based solutions using emerging technologies, David has taken his passion for design to the next level by creating a unique smartwatch that blends technology with style.
This innovative timepiece features a 3D-printed case, band, and frequency components, making it stand out from traditional watches. Instead of a conventional analog or digital display, it uses a seven-segment LED screen, giving it a futuristic look. The electronics are powered by an Arduino board and connected via a USB PowerBank, making it both functional and customizable.
In the second version of the watch, David’s wife suggested adding an alcohol sensor, which allows users to check their blood alcohol concentration. The idea is that after a social event, you can simply blow into the sensor while in your car to determine if it's safe to drive. If the reading exceeds the legal limit, the watch will alert the user with a sound, encouraging them to call a taxi instead.
Despite its unique design, some critics, like China’s 3D Printing Network Xiaobian, find the watch a bit bulky, taking up a large portion of the wrist. However, David sees this as a positive aspect, as the bold design has attracted attention and sparked conversations. “It feels great,†he says, highlighting the appeal of combining engineering with fashion.
The watch has become a conversation starter, showcasing how technology and style can coexist. Whether it's the LED display, the 3D-printed structure, or the built-in safety feature, it's clear that David Ng is redefining what a smartwatch can be.
