Teijin Strengthens PET Bottle Recycling Process

The Japanese PET manufacturer Teijin further strengthened the development of recycling of PET bottles and made a further step towards the goal of “from bottle to bottle”.
The company said that the process of recycling its PET bottles into PET bottles will be commercialized in 2003.
The purpose of recycling is to convert PET bottles into a chemical called methyl terephthalate (DMT). It is then hydrated to form terephthalic acid (TPA), which is the main precursor of PET. Teijin company claims that the energy consumption for producing DMT in this way is 30% less than the traditional method using petroleum. The main challenge of this process is to remove all impurities from PET - such as Other polymers, additives, dyes, and metal PET. Teijin has converted PET resin to DMT at its plant in Tokuyama with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons. PET production will begin next year.
Teijin already has a "fiber to fiber" recycling plant with an annual output of 10,000 tons, and plans to build another similar "film to film" factory.
