In the past decade, flexographic printing has been rapidly developed worldwide. The quality of printed products has reached or approached the level of gravure and offset printing, and has obvious advantages in improving the environment. Developed countries in Europe and the United States are considered to be “the best and most promising printing methods on the planet”. Domestic manufacturers have also seen the advantages of flexo printing. In recent years, more than 100 narrow-width flexographic printing production lines have been imported from abroad, together with domestic production of flexo lines, totaling no less than 150.

However, at the same time that China introduced "hardware", it ignored the progress of "software." There are first-rate flexo presses, imported plates, and qualified inks are not acceptable. Most of the plates used by domestic manufacturers are products of companies such as 3M and DuPont. The quality of the plates is not a problem, but the level of domestic plates is uneven and the prices are higher (the plate price is 0.15 yuan/CM, the plate-making cost is 0.9 yuan / CM), the level of cheap and dare not guarantee, so many manufacturers make their own plates, the technical aspects of plate-making are ignored. For example, if the color gradation is insufficient, fine patterns and large blocks are made on a single plate, media patterns and printing pressure cannot be well transitioned, and the edges are not sufficiently detailed. Flexographic printing presses are more complex than offset and gravure printing operations. They must understand the function and use of ink additives. They must master the influence and adjustment methods of ink viscosity and pH. Most of it is made of organic monomers dispersed into a viscous, transparent liquid through a solvent, or directly made of synthetic resin through the dissolution of alcohols, the price is slightly lower than the waterborne Varnish, but often ignored by domestic manufacturers, solvent varnish coating area is twice the amount of water based varnish, therefore, in fact, the actual cost of waterborne varnish is lower than solvent varnish. Moreover, solvent varnish can be qualified in terms of the quality of “glazing”, but other aspects are not comprehensive, and alcohols are organic volatiles, although not as contaminating and toxic as benzene in inks. Taking the United States as an example, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed restrictions on the content of organic volatiles in inks and coatings. This restriction will become more stringent over time. At present, the use of solvent in the United States is reduced from 80% to 20%. A research report of the National Printing Association (PIA) further pointed out that in order to comply with the environmental claims and decrees, the ink and coating manufacturers will make greater efforts in their products toward both water and UV.

Therefore, objectively speaking, the market prospects of domestic waterborne varnish are better. Obstacles still exist because of increased environmental awareness and lower product prices. After all, Varnish is only a "supporting role" in the printed matter, but it is only a modification of the printed product. The “reasonable price” mentioned in the previous paragraph is that if the quality of the domestic-made functional synthetic resin can be used as an alternative to the UV varnishes, the price of the water-based varnishes can be reduced to 20 to 30 yuan/kg in two to three years. .
