The ISTMETZ Group, a global leader in the development, manufacturing, and sale of UV curing systems, has recently received great recognition: Their newly launched Ink Rub Tester (IRT) has been honored with the International 2012–2013 Printing Technology Award. This prestigious award highlights the innovation and quality of IRT, which is now a standout product in the company’s expanding product portfolio. In addition to UV lamps, UV curing components, and optical coatings, ISTMETZ continues to broaden its range, making the IRT an essential tool for quality control in the printing industry.
The IRT Ink Friction Tester is designed to evaluate the degree of cure of UV inks and varnishes. It allows for quick and repeatable testing on various surfaces such as coated paper, cardboard, or film. Like traditional methods, it uses both the scratch test and solvent test techniques, but with a key difference—IRT offers greater control and stability during testing. This ensures consistent and reliable results, making it a more effective tool for monitoring and managing product quality in real-world production environments.
In the scratch test method, the IRT maintains a constant pressure and distance throughout the process. The device applies a precise pressure using calibrated weights and moves the probe exactly 50 mm across the surface. This setup ensures uniform friction and force, while also allowing for easy comparison of results before and after testing. To accommodate different materials, users can choose from various probes and application systems, ensuring accurate testing under controlled conditions.
For the solvent test method, the IRT guarantees a consistent amount of solvent and a fixed number of probe movements. A magnetically controlled dosing pump delivers the exact solvent volume, while the number of reciprocations is pre-set. This allows for accurate evaluation of UV ink and varnish resistance to solvents like isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, and ethyl acetate. These tests are crucial for determining the effectiveness of UV curing processes.
The ability of the IRT to measure resistance to scratching and solvents provides valuable insights into the degree of UV ink or varnish curing. Its user-friendly design, precise control, and highly reproducible results make it an ideal solution for quality assurance in the printing and coating industries. Whether used in R&D or production lines, the IRT helps ensure that products meet the highest standards of performance and durability.
