Royal British Forces Training Manual (Chapter 1)

Chapter IV Selection

The selection process lasts 4 weeks.

It is used to detect the endurance of professional athletes. The purpose of such intense training is to test whether recruits can combine physical endurance with mental toughness, even when they are fighting alone from their comrades.

This chapter introduces the process of selection of a truly special airline. We must first tell you a cautionary story and tell you why you should attach great importance to this process. What needs to be remembered is that the type of training that you are going to do during the selection process is not entirely about testing your perseverance and endurance. In fact, in many ways, the purpose of selection is to reveal your ability to survive. Even the most experienced and strong special airline regiments will feel a sense of fear when they begin their selection process. To understand the reason, we need to look at the last time in the life of Major Mike Kylie.

Mike Kylie used to be and is still a legend in the special Airline Hall of Fame. In 1972, he led a heroic defensive battle in the Battle of Mirbat in Amman. On July 19 of that year, more than 250 guerrillas launched a full-scale attack on the port of Mirbat in southern Oman. At the time, Capri, who was still a captain, led a team of nine special air crews to launch a truly epic action that eventually led to attack and retreat while killing 38 guerrillas. Due to his outstanding performance in the war, Kylie was awarded a special feat.

Breconbricks mountain landscape. In Europe, there are many ridiculous mountainous environments, but the climate in Breconbricks Mountain is extremely variable - in winter, the weather can change from sunny and warm weather to ice and snow in a matter of hours.

After 7 years, Kylie was already a major, and he felt it necessary to test his abilities again. At this point, he is almost 33 years old. Despite this age, he decided to participate once again in the infamous "endurance march" during the selection of special airline missions. This march, as we will see in a minute, is the most difficult one in the selection. It is a real trekking fear in the mountains of Wales. Everything is bad for you—the weather, the weight of the kit. , time and steep slopes. Keelly's purpose is to confirm that, according to the time allocated for participating in the selection several years ago, he still has the ability to complete this most challenging training. In the history of the special air force regime that continued until this time, only three volunteers died during the selection process. Compared with the 23-year history of the selection process up to 1979, the death toll is not high. Although Kylie is not a recruit, he is about to enter the list of deaths.

On February 1, 1979, Major Kylie departed from the Tall Bente Reservoir. The weather at the time - Kylie chose to march in winter - was terrifying. The temperature has been below the freezing point, and heavy rains have swept the entire area, followed by snow, ice, and ice. Visibility is terrifyingly low, which makes it extremely important to accurately locate the location.

Keelley actually belongs to a group of 30 recruits. The group is divided into 2 teams of 15 each. However, Kylie chose to walk alone. Now recall that his decision was fatal. However, the decision that Kiely made that day was not the only one. His enthusiasm drove his sanity. He not only saved the combat tarpaulin on the back cover, but also did not listen to a little warning, such as wearing double gloves in the backpack. There is a problem with the rucksack itself - the base uses bricks to fill the rucksack to the prescribed weight of 23 kilograms. Although this method was common in the first days of special air traffic missions, it was eventually abandoned because the weight distribution of the bricks in the rucksack was not uniform, making it impossible for the carriers to stand firm. The test is not true. Because these factors were all unfavorable to him, the moment he took a big step away from the starting point, in fact, he was already in danger.

A small group of players met at a meeting point in a heavy snowstorm. Heavy snow makes it more difficult for the map-compass to be oriented, because the contour has changed, the main landmarks are blurred, and visibility is greatly reduced. Always wear a waterproof suit.

With a little increase in altitude, Kylie's situation is getting worse. Initially, he surpassed everyone at the start, but as time passed, more and more recruits began to surpass him, and he became increasingly tired. The weather was terrible, and all the people who participated that day - except for Kylie - realized that their lives were likely to be threatened by hypothermia. After negotiating with each other, most people decided that it would be best to go to the empty room under a valley to avoid the biting wind, but Kylie decided to move on.

In the end, the team behind the training team met Kylie, who had been knocked down and whose body temperature was too low. Because he did not have a waterproof cloth, the cold rain and ice snow completely soaked him, and the fierce biting cold wind was devouring a little heat in his body. The soldiers wanted to help Kylie, but he was firmly rejected. Although the soldiers wanted to drag him to a safe place, the night had already come and Kylie was once again gone. Two recruits who had just taken care of Kylie took him around for an hour and found him, but in the end he was forced to return to the empty room for asylum.

About 10 o'clock in the morning of the next morning, two special air force team members who were marching met Kylie. At this point, he is almost gone. He sat in the snow, his body was full of snow, so that at first the soldiers thought he was a stone covered by snow. While one of the soldiers stayed to look after him, another set off to seek help. Because the weather was so bad at that time, it was not until 4:30 the next morning that people discovered the location of Kylie. After spending the other night in the mountains - even though a brave corps of a special corps was accompanied by a dying officer in a snow cave - Kylie's situation is hopeless, waiting for the helicopter to come and lift him from the mountains ,He is dead. Looking back at Killie’s death, we can see that Killy’s own mistakes directly led to his death, although I’ve had other players who have also suffered frostbite, including even those who had sought shelter. However, Kylie’s fatal attempt to complete the march (he had been engaged in administrative work a few years ago) has become part of a culture of absolute independence and perseverance. The special service force vowed that the harshness of training should be as real as actual combat. In combat, special airline regiments either rely on their own feet to win or die.

Humidity and strong winds are killers in sub-freezing environments. Snowpit bunkers are a good temporary measure to avoid both. In advanced waterproof suits, soldiers can stay dry even when exposed to snow. A shallow snow pit can protect him from the cold wind.

However, Kylie’s tragic death is an important lesson for us to see the selection process. It is important to treat this process seriously because success requires sensible judgment and physical health. The selection of 4 weeks is a real test for your survivability, so you must really use your brain when you are preparing. You must also carefully listen to all the advice of experienced sergeants and officers. Killie essentially died of bad winter weather, but no matter what season he participated in the selection process, it would always be dangerous, as pointed out by the special Air Corps sergeant:

“Summer selection has several advantages over winter: The weather is generally more agreeable; there are no frustrating snow storms to cover your face; generally speaking, running is more comfortable, but the downside is that due to all Plants are all densely growing and the mountains are not easy to walk: all the plants are growing, the grass is longer, and the road is almost completely covered by the 'Starry Sky' (a kind of plant) - a colleague of mine once dug a bush Gypsophila, and took it back - it was small clusters of ups and downs, and it was easy to hurt your ankle.

Ankle injuries may be as dangerous in summer as in some climates in the winter, but Breckenridge's mountainous terrain is more likely to cause your selection to fail. However, the key is that the recruits participating in the selection must face the reality in such a harsh environment. Therefore, the selection is far from predictable. However, according to the recommended method, you must consider yourself and make your own judgment in the course of the action.
