3D printed self-defense clothing: women's bodyguards

As a vulnerable group, women are often harmed by social criminals. In August last year, incidents of female college students losing their links across the country were frequently reported. Therefore, in addition to the strengthening of public security, women themselves should also raise their awareness of self-defense. Recently, Nitzan Kish, a newly graduated design student in Israel, thought of this. In her 3D print "Me, Myself & I" project, the defensive function of the clothing is valued, which leads to a gorgeous, but slightly threatening, self-defense style of women's clothing.

According to Nitzan Kish, this is her graduation project at the Bezalel School of Art and Design in Jerusalem. “I am 29 years old and I am a professional photographer, fashion designer and goldsmith,” Nitzan said. “I believe that through 3D printing, we will be able to create something we have never seen before. I think this is the next industry. Revolution, it will change our way of thinking and consumption."

Nitzan explained that she was inspired by her childhood and decided to design such a project. “When I was a child, I was interested in self-defense. At the time, my father taught me and my brother to practice karate,” Nitzan said. “In my graduation project, I decided to promote people’s thinking in a way that highlights the function of clothing defense. The issue of women’s self-defense."

Although you may find this a bit exaggerated, the truth is that in the city of Nitzan, Jerusalem (or any big city in the world), harassment and violence against women is quite serious. "According to Israel's 2014 statistics, about one-third of women in Israel have experienced sexual harassment, and 80% of women live in fear of sexual assault. A quarter of women in Israel have been raped. Nitzan said.

These shocking statistics made Nitzan decide what to do. "The answer is, if there is no solution at the moment, let's talk about these issues! At least let people pay attention to it," she said. So she came up with a set of solutions for modular 3D printed clothing, which consisted of 3D printed parts that were combined with each other, interlocking and looking like armor, but very soft. “These components are combined to form different costumes with various functions, but their main purpose is to defend themselves and protect their bodies.”

It is conceivable that such 3D printed garments are certainly quite time consuming when designed. The project began in October 2014 and the final digital design was not completed until February of this year. "And the 3D printing process is quite difficult. At first I designed a relatively simple chain and learned how to use 3D printers in the process. At first, I used Bezale College's Stratasys 3D printer and Synergy RM. Printer," she said.

Moreover, considering that these garments should have defensive capabilities, the 3D printing material used by Nitzan is nylon 12, not the weaker plastic we are used to. “In the course of the project, I established a partnership with ARAN. They used the most suitable materials to help me print. But the time of 3D printing is difficult to evaluate, and it often takes several weeks to print a piece of clothing,” she added. . Fortunately, printing with nylon 12 works well and requires little post-processing. In the end, she got 24 “layouts” of different structural textures, each of which consisted of hundreds of different 3D printed parts.

So what is the purpose of these fascinating 3D printed garments? First, Nitzan hopes that it will play a role in protecting women. At present, Nitzan is planning to share her design via the Internet, so that women around the world can print it out with their own 3D printer and play a little self-defense.

More importantly, Nitzan hopes that this project will raise concerns and discussions about women's personal safety issues, which will really help to actually change the status quo.
