3D printing Thesis Couture: the most comfortable high heels

With the development of 3D printing technology , 3D printed clothing and apparel are no longer rare in the fashion industry. Not long ago, OFweek3D printing network reported a news about "3D printed shock-absorbing high heels: comfort is like walking the clouds." Recently, a designer from California used 3D printing to transform high heels to make heels more comfortable.

It is understood that this project is called Thesis Couture, its main purpose is to rebuild the function of high heels, in the process, 3D printing plastic can play a key role. Surprisingly, the project's curator, Dolly Singh, is not a real designer. Dolly Singh has been working on human resources in the aerospace industry in California for many years, and for the past five and a half years she has been a senior executive of the well-known private space company SpaceX.

As a professional woman, she wears high heels every day for many years to make her suffer. And she thinks incredible that today's technology is so developed, but high heels have not changed in the past two centuries. Therefore, the idea of transforming high heels has been lingering in her mind.

Dolly Singh

After investigation, Singh found that the basic structure of high heels is very simple, mainly relying on three materials: metal plates, metal handles and a little compressed cardboard, the rest is basically aesthetic. "When you're wearing high heels, it's basically standing on a cardboard with a small metal rod, so it's not a particularly complicated structure from an engineering point of view," Singh explained.

After learning that the basic structure of the high heels could be made more comfortable, Singh left SpaceX and entered the incubator Founder's Institute with his Thesis Couture project. Since then, she and her team have been working hard to develop comfortable but yet stylish high heels. "As a stiletto heel, it might never be worn like a tennis shoe, but it doesn't have to be like a torture tool." She wrote on Thesis Couture website, "We have re-healed the heels from the inside out. Design. Using structural engineering techniques and advanced materials, our patent-pending technology has redistributed the pressure on stilettos."

But general product developers will tell you that it is not easy or cheap to make a prototype first. Fortunately, 3D printing technology is now available. Thanks to her background in the aerospace industry, she has recruited Matt Thomas, an expert in industrial engineering and modern plastics. He led the entrepreneurial team to use 3D printing technology for their own product design and prototyping. They rely more on industrial grade polymers, which not only makes prototyping easier, but the resulting structure is more effective in supporting the user's weight.

With the help of 3D printing technology, the company's Thesis Couture high-heeled prototype was very smooth. Currently Singh's team is working on manufacturing solutions and is busy raising funds. So far, they have raised $700,000, which is very close to their $1 million fundraising goal. Although the current research and development has not yet been finalized, Singh said they are expected to start product bookings this fall. At the time of booking, the expected starting price will be around $925, but may eventually drop to $350.
