Scientists rely on sound waves to create new lasers

Since the laser is short for "Stimulated Emission Amplification", these new devices using phonons should be called phasers. Since the laser was introduced more than 50 years ago, almost all lasers have used light waves. Scientists initially speculated that sound waves could be used instead, but it turned out to be very complicated. It wasn't until 2010 that researchers first created sonic lasers. But the earliest devices were hybrid models, which used traditional laser light to create continuous acoustic emission. Imran Mahboob, an engineer at the basic laboratory of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Co., said: "In our research, the optical part is set aside. Because they occupy less space, these new devices are easier to adapt to other uses and equipment."

Scientists say the laser is still restricted by the media.

In a traditional laser, the electrons in the gas or crystal are stimulated at the same time. When they return to a lower energy state, a special wavelength of light is released, which is then directed by the mirror to produce a beam of light. Acoustic lasers work on a similar principle. The phasers developed by Mahboob and his team rely on a mechanical oscillator to vibrate and excite the phonon group, and the phonon group relaxation process feeds back energy to the device. Light has the advantage of being able to propagate in a vacuum, so the laser beam can be easily directed anywhere, even through space. Phonons require medium propagation, which means that such laser waves are currently confined to their equipment. Mahboob said: "We need to find a way to spread this vibration in the form of energy."

This phaser has many potential uses, such as converting this mechanical oscillation into an oscillating electrical signal that can be used as a small alarm clock. Once this technology matures further, other potential applications include the use of ultrasonic frequencies to perform security or medical scans of objects and humans. In addition, this very narrow sound wave can be used for high-precision measurement. Mahboob said: "When the first laser research was finally published in the journal Nature, it created a new field of optics and communications. Perhaps we have also entered a new field."
